Twilight Lounge is a Chinese restaurant in New York specializing in a fusion of Cantonese and Sichuan cuisine. Baicai Design was commissioned to create a space that combines a sense of quality with a relaxed atmosphere, aiming to express the cultural richness of Chinese dining.
Located in Manhattan’s East Village, the site was formerly a Japanese restaurant with existing basic finishes and kitchen layout. Building on the original structure, we transformed the space through ceiling, flooring, wall treatments, and furnishings to create a distinct atmosphere.
The space is designed to reflect the culture and professionalism of Chinese cuisine. Inspired by traditional Chinese spices, the design uses a warm, spice-toned color palette to create a cohesive atmosphere across the ceiling, walls, and floor.
Spices are the soul of Chinese cuisine and an extension of its philosophy—their interplay reflects its rich diversity. We translated this into an art installation, using spices and canvas to line the perimeter of the space, expressing the brand’s dedication and expertise in Chinese culinary culture.
We aimed to bring a tactile Chinese aesthetic into the space through materials like wood, fabric, folds, and ceramic textures. Above the bar, we introduced a traditional plaque element, using rich textures to define the ceiling and transform it into a spatial installation.
Through spatial design, the atmosphere resonates with diners. Since opening, Twilight Lounge has achieved commercial success. We hope the space continues to reflect the brand’s vision and serve as a place where more people can experience and appreciate Chinese cuisine.
